Bachelor’s Program in Engineering

Nagaoka University of Technology, in accordance with its Diploma Policy, offers subjects required by each specialized field of science and technology under an educational philosophy that integrates the undergraduate and master’s programs. Through these subjects, the Bachelor’s Program develops leading engineers who possess advanced practical and creative abilities that enable them to perform at the global level. To this end, the university offers a systematic curriculum based on the following policies.

  1. Students admitted to the first year of the Bachelor’s Program will take general studies subjects, foreign language subjects, and basic engineering subjects; whereas students admitted to the third year of the Bachelor’s Program will take general studies subjects, foreign language subjects, and specialized engineering subjects. Each subject will be conducted as a lecture subject, exercise subject, or experiment/practical training (or skills practice) subject in accordance with its purpose and objective goals.
  2. Students will take the Jitsumu-Kunren internship in the fourth year as the overall culmination of their studies in the Bachelor’s Program. The Jitsumu-Kunren internship is compulsory for students to enter graduate school. Students who do not take the Jitsumu-Kunren internship must complete Thesis Research.
  3. Through the systematic organization of subjects according to the areas of specialization in each major, the Bachelor’s Program provides an education that enhances specialized expertise while also addressing interdisciplinary areas. In addition, students will develop proficiency in information technology that is closely related to each major. Furthermore, students may take subjects in other majors in order to cultivate a multifaceted perspective in their expertise.
  4. General studies subjects are designed to cultivate the abilities of students to apply their expertise in specialized fields for the benefit of humanity and society. Engineering Ethics is a compulsory subject for all majors. In addition, students will learn the fundamentals of information technology by taking compulsory subjects on AI and data mathematics. General studies subjects are systematically organized to be consistent with graduate-level common subjects with the aim of achieving each of the targets described in the Diploma Policy.
  5. Foreign language subjects include English and a second foreign language. Through the English subjects, students will acquire the four skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) and enhance specific skills in order to develop fundamental and practical abilities for global activities. Classes for the second foreign languages are offered from basic to conversational levels.
  6. Various courses are offered to allow the in-depth study of interdisciplinary and frontier fields to address the challenges of modern society, and to enable students to study specific areas outside of their specialized fields. These courses are offered to students from all majors. While enrolled in their majors, students will be certified as completing a course if they take and pass the designated subjects.
  7. Each major provides a curriculum organizational diagram to support the students’ self-directed and independent study.

[Policy for Academic Achievement Evaluation]

The syllabus of each subject clearly states its purpose and objective goals, as well as its associations with the Diploma Policy. Grading is conducted in a fair, rigorous, and objective evaluation of performance, and credits will be awarded to students who pass the subjects. For the Jitsumu-Kunren internship, students will be evaluated by the host institutions and academic supervisors according to the content and results of their practical training at the dispatch destination.
