Efforts of Nagaoka University of Technology Toward Achieving the SDGs

United Nations Academic Impact Hub for SDG 9

NUT was appointed to a United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) Hub for SDG 9 (Industry,Innovation and Infrastructure) by the United Nations on October 2018. Only one university in the whole world is appointed as Hub for each of the 17 goals of SDG, and NUT is the only appointment from East Asia. We have been actively working on the SDGs from early stage toward the realization of a sustainable world, and has been highly regarded by the UN as an exemplar of an innovative approach to SDGs.

Summary:NUT has produced more than ten thousands creative engineers with practical capabilities since its inception in 1976.NUT graduates are always top-rated in job placement market.The high reputation and employability of graduates comes from NUT's guiding principles of education called GIGAKU.On the basis of this achievement,and recognizing the importance of sustainable development requirements for engineers,NUT decided to renew its education program under GIGAKU SDG Institute,by fully integrating SDGs into current program structure under the leadership of President Nobuhiko Azuma.NUT will disseminate the concept and good practices of GIGAKU SDG Institute to various part of the world through its international partnership.

Context and justification:For long years,engineers have been taught to achieve such goals as efficiency,cost,quality,performance,etc.of their designed products and services.While these goals still remain important for the welfare and happiness of the people,now they have to be trained to pay priority attention to the critical goals of the global society,represented by SDGs.Engineers are the profession which directly affects the process of interaction between mankind and nature through products and services they conceive,design,and manufacture.They are responsible for the future of the global society and more importantly they have a power to change the mode of interaction.Because of this reason,engineering education institutes of the world should quickly incorporate SDGs into their education program.

NUT was created by Japanese Government to be a model engineering education institute in 1976 and its education program was constructed along with completely new paradigm.The founders has coined a term GIGAKU to describe this paradigm.Since then NUT has produced more than ten thousand creative engineers and has won the highest reputation and the best employment records among Japanese engineering institutes. It is evidenced by many authoritative reports and surveys.

Based on this achievement, and recognizing the critically important roles and responsibility of engineers,NUT decided to incorporate SDGs into its education program.This is why NUT proposes UNESCO to establish GIGAKU SDG Institute.NUT will disseminates the concept and good practices to its international partners.

Also,the percentage of NUT faculties conducting research on each goal of SDGs is shown in the figure below.

Global Pro-Active Root Technology Program

This program aims to produce professionals with profound knowledge of fundamental technology, which is the basis of industries related to the intermix of materials science and power engineering. This program will contribute to solution of SDGs and nourish the following four categories of international-level faculties;

1. Pioneering power in academic fieldswhere doctoral researchers cultivate their original research ideas
2. Leading-edge IT capacitywhere knowledge continuously progresses instead of impromptu cramming
3. Pioneering human powerwhere unknown areas are explored through broad human networks
4. Social implementation and execution abilitieswhere challenges facing industries are solved
