"Beach Cleanup × Learning" Event Held with Student SDGs Promoters
November 05, 2025
Aiming to promote and increase public awareness of the SDGs, Nagaoka University of Technology (NUT) hosted a "Beach Cleanup × Learning" event on Saturday, October 11th, at Teradomari Chuo Beach.
The event was co-organized with the Nagaoka Yukyu Lions Club and held in cooperation with the "Teradomari Youth Group -Hane-." The objective of the event was to learn about the ocean, science, and engineering through a beach cleanup. About 150 people participated in the event, including local elementary school students and their guardians, members of the Nagaoka Yukyu Lions Club, and NUT's personnel, mainly our Student SDGs Promoters.
The planned experience of seine fishing was canceled due to bad weather. However, the participants received a lecture on the current state of the fishing industry and marine environment from the Teradomari fisheries cooperative members while viewing an actual seine net used for fishing.
Following the lecture, the participants moved to the beach and collected trash, considering local rules for waste sorting. Since much of the collected trash included plastic products and other items originating from daily life, the participants were reminded of the importance of protecting marine environment through their daily actions. In particular, by linking the explanation of a seine net with a beach cleanup, the participants learned details regarding the current situation and the issue that seine nets are also collecting marine debris.
After the beach cleanup, fresh fish caught at Teradomari Fishing Port (which were originally planned to be caught by seine fishing) were shared with the participants, thanks to the kindness of the local fisheries cooperative. Many participants went home with smiles, carrying their fish, and the event served as a heartwarming occasion for friendly interaction between the local community and the participants.
NUT plans to continue organizing SDGs-related events and seminars in the future, working with various organizations and local residents to carry out activities for the promotion and awareness of the SDGs. We kindly ask for your continued understanding and support for our SDGs promotion and awareness activities.
