A community-participation event titled "Nagaoka City Time Travel Mystery Solving Game" was held as part of the "Multicultural Campus Project Toward Social Impact", during the 45th NUT Festival(NUTFES),on September 19th and 20th, 2026. The event attracted approximately 570 visitors over the two days.
Through this event, which uses aerial photographs of Nagaoka City, participants can learn about the city's history and how it has changed over time. The event aims to deepen students' understanding of and attachment to Nagaoka City, as well as to create opportunities for interaction between students and local residents.
Participants compared aerial photographs from two different years:1975 and 2005, as they attempted to answer historical quiz questions about changes in the town posed by the event's student staff. After solving the mystery, participants were asked to imagine what Nagaoka would be like in 10 years and write down their thoughts on sticky notes.
A mini-lecture by Professor Toshiya Matsukawa, whose specialty is the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, was also a highlight of the event, and participants listened with great interest to his explanation of Nagaoka's urban development.
The participating students shared positive feedback, saying that it was interesting to learn more about Nagaoka. Local residents also seemed to enjoy solving the mystery, asking the student staff for hints and discussing the answers with other participants as they tackled the questions.
Many students at Nagaoka University of Technology come from outside Niigata Prefecture or from overseas. Events like these provide students with opportunities to learn about Nagaoka's history and attractions, deepen their understanding of and connection to Nagaoka through interaction with local residents, and ultimately help foster lasting ties with the city.
Through this project, we will continue to promote initiatives in collaboration with the local community.
