1. Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research

Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research (“Gakkensai”) is an accident compensation system that aims to contribute to the enrichment and development of the university’s educational and research activities by providing necessary insurance benefits to students who suffer physical injuries due to sudden and unexpected accidents of external origin in the course of their educational or research activities (including commuting to school and extracurricular activities). At Nagaoka University of Technology, all students are required to enroll in this insurance system upon matriculation.

Injuries include the following (please note that “illnesses” are not covered by this insurance):

(1)    Acute poisoning symptoms that occur suddenly when toxic gases or substances from outside the body are accidentally and temporarily inhaled, absorbed, or ingested.
(2)   Physical harm caused by sun or heat exposure.

Willful acts, fighting, suicide, criminal acts, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, wars, riots, injuries from radiation/radioactivity, unlicensed/drunk driving, accidents occurring while in the student dormitory, accidents occurring in activities/times/places prohibited by the university, and dangerous extracurricular activities such as mountain climbing and skydiving, etc. In addition, accidents that do not fulfill the conditions of being “sudden, unexpected, and of external origin” (e.g., acute alcohol intoxication due to drinking) are not covered.

*At Nagaoka University of Technology, school events refer to Spring Sports Meetings, NUT Festivals, Autumn Sports Meetings, Circle Leader Workshops, Nagaoka Universities Combined Sports Meetings, and other events organized by the university.

2. Liability Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research

Liability Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research (“Gakkenbai”) provides necessary insurance benefits for students who are legally liable for damages arising from causing injury to others or damaging others’ property in the course of their educational or research activities (including commuting to school and extracurricular activities). At Nagaoka University of Technology, all students are required to enroll in this insurance system upon matriculation.

This insurance provides coverage both in Japan and overseas, including damages incurred while traveling to or from any of the specified locations. However, accidents involving the use of a motor vehicle are not covered.

3. Comprehensive Insurance for Student Lives Coupled with “Gakkensai” (Optional)

Students may choose to enroll in Comprehensive Insurance for Student Lives Coupled with “Gakkensai”, which provides benefits for accidents that are not covered by Gakkensai or Gakkenbai. Please contact the university staff for details.
