Top Global University Project Overview

To improve the international competitiveness of Japan’s higher education, we aim to promote radical internationalization through collaboration with outstanding universities overseas, through university reform, and through lending intensive support combined with system reform to top universities doing education and research at a world-class level or global universities leading internationalization.

[Type A] Top type

Top Type is for world-class universities that have the potential to be ranked in the top 100 in world university rankings.

[Type B] Global traction type

Global Traction Type is for innovative universities that lead the internationalization of Japanese society, based on continuous improvement of their current efforts.

GIGAKU = Science of Technology

Natural Science represents scientific approach to natural phenomena. In contrast, GIGAKU represents scientific approach to technology. Basic philosophy of NUT is education to develop practical engineers based on GIGAKU and carry out the research and development aimed to industry innovation.

Mongolian University of Science and Technology

Nagaoka University of Technology has discussed the implementation of the twinning program of undergraduate schools with the Mongolian University of Science and Technology based on results of mutual exchange to prepare for the creation of an educational environment in Mongolia and for acceptance of these students into Japanese universities.

Mongolia has started GIGAKU education since September, 2014 by establishing the Mongolia and Japan Joint High School of Science and Technology (Mongolia Kosen) modeled after the education of Japanese high schools of science and technology.

Nagaoka University of Technology, operation Mongolian Office since March 2015, will work on extended cultivation of practical engineers on the campus of the Mongolian University of Science and Technology in collaboration with it.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology


Opening Ceremony of Vietnam Japan International Institute for Science of Technology


Nagaoka University of Technology has opened a graduate program, the Vietnam Japan International Institute for Science of Technology (VJIIST), to culture practical, innovative, and global engineers based on science of technology in cooperation with Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

VJIIST applies the educational curriculum, based on the science of technology, which Nagaoka University conducts, and adds Vietnam’s circumstances. This is the first-ever full-scale export of a Japanese graduate school. The administration is conducted jointly, with a director from the Hanoi University of Science and Technology and a vice director from the Nagaoka University of Technology.
