“Beach Cleanup × Learning” Event Held with Student SDGs Promoters

2023.06.02

On Saturday, May 13, a “Beach Cleanup × Learning” event was held at Gomoto Beach in Nagaoka City as a part of the activities aimed at promoting SDGs among the general public.

This was the third event of its kind. Student SDGs Promoters and others from our university were joined by participants from Nagaoka KOSEN (National Institute of Technology, Nagaoka College) and local residents. The idea behind the cleanup was to learn about the ocean, science and engineering while cleaning the beach. The event was held in cooperation with Ms. Ayano YAMADA, President of NPO Lily&Marry'S and Teradomari Youth Group ~Hane~. Participation was high, with about 60 people in attendance.

After Ms. Yamada’s opening address and an explanation of the work to be done provided by Mr. Kimura, a representative of Hane, the participants picked up trash along the beach, sorting it according to local trash disposal rules. In addition to plastic bottles and plastic products, participants also collected microplastics (pieces of plastic under 5mm in size that have deteriorated as a result of exposure to ultraviolet rays and waves).

After the beach cleanup, participants learned about the ocean and science through hands-on activities, such as observing offshore currents using a sea surface colorant and making iron from iron sand. Participants listened to explanations of the characteristics and dangers of rip currents, observed the formation of iron with great interest, and developed a deeper understanding of the SDGs by considering how they affect the environment.

We will continue to plan SDGs-related events and seminars and conduct activities to promote and raise awareness of the SDGs in cooperation with various organizations and local residents. We appreciate your continued understanding and support of our SDGs activities.
