Research Content

The main themes of this laboratory are the creation of large, blue, regular-flowered Phalaenopsis orchids, the development of building greening materials through moss culture, and the analysis of high-frequency somatic enbryogenesis systems from carrot cotyledons. For example, with the aim of producing unprecedented large blue flowers in Phalaenopsis orchilds, we are conducting research into changing flower color by modifying the gene that alters the pH of large-flowering varieties using genetic analysis and introduction techniques. We also conduct research on a wide range of plants, including chamomile, bittersweet, duckweed, and violets.

Flower color change, stem thallus differentiation, somatic embryo formation

A Day in the Lab

This laboratory does not have a core time, and seminars are held every Friday. Because the research subject is plants, it takes time for results to appear, so it is important to plan well in advance. During practical training, students are dispatched to agricultural and horticultural research institutions in Niigata Prefecture and Hokkaido, where they can acquire knowledge and skills useful in the field, focusing on commercial crops. In addition to welcome parties for new students and send-off parties for practical training, the laboratory also hosts numerous events, such as trips with professors to see salmon swim upstream and seasonal flowers such as chrysanthemums and cherry blossoms, making it a warm and welcoming laboratory.
