Doctoral Program

Doctoral Program in Engineering

Nagaoka University of Technology aims to nurture the development of leading engineers and researchers who are adept at using information technology; and also possess advanced practical and creative abilities that can facilitate the global expansion of technology, abilities to create new knowledge and technologies, as well as original and advanced expertise. The doctoral program will enable students to acquire the following four attributes through subjects set by each department, as well as research guidance and research activities for the doctoral thesis.

  1. Ability to fully utilize cutting-edge specialized knowledge and skills in various technological and scientific fields.
  2. Broad educational ability to comprehend life, humanity, and society from technological and scientific perspectives; ability to explore new fields based on an understanding of integrated technologies involving multiple specialized disciplines; as well as multifaceted and flexible advanced cognitive abilities to create new ideas in science and technology.
  3. Ability to advance academic research based on high ethical standards, as well as practical and creative abilities with an active willingness to continue developing research findings until they are actualized as new technologies.
  4. A balanced international perspective and global communication abilities that incorporate advanced research and technical abilities, as well as global leadership skills that can lead industries in Japan and the rest of the world.

Each student’s performance will be assessed fairly and impartially in accordance with the goals and criteria specified in the syllabus.

[Policy for Academic Achievement Evaluation]
In order to develop leading engineers and researchers who are adept at using information technology; and also possess advanced practical and creative abilities that can facilitate the global expansion of technology, abilities to create new knowledge and technologies, as well as original and advanced expertise; students will be evaluated based on their level of achieving the above objectives through examinations and reports in lecture subjects, as well as through reports and oral examinations in seminars and experiment/practical classes. Student performance in the examination of a subject shall be assessed using a 5-point grading system (S, A, B, C, and D). Grades S, A, B, and C are passing grades, while D is a failing grade. Students who pass a subject shall be awarded the designated credits. In addition, the research achievements of students shall be reviewed and assessed based on specified thesis screening criteria and methods.

Doctoral Program
(for students enrolled before March 2022)

Nagaoka University of Technology aims to nurture the development of leading researchers and engineers who possess advanced practical and creative abilities that can facilitate the global expansion of technology, the ability to create new knowledge and technologies, as well as original and leading expertise. The doctoral program comprises classes established by each department, and constitutes an educational program that allows students to acquire the following four types of abilities through classes, research guidance, and research activities for the doctoral thesis.

  1. The ability to fully utilize cutting-edge specialized knowledge and skills in various technological and scientific fields.
  2. The broad educational ability to view aspects of life, humanity, and society from the perspectives of technology and science; the ability to explore new fields based on an understanding of integrated technologies covering multiple specialized disciplines; as well as multifaceted and flexible thinking abilities for advanced technology and science.
  3. The ability to advance academic research based on high ethical standards, as well as the practical and creative abilities with an active willingness to continue developing these research findings until they are actualized as new technologies.
  4. A cosmopolitan mode of thinking and communication ability balanced with advanced research and technical abilities, as well as a global leadership ability that can lead industries in Japan and the rest of the world.

Grading is conducted in a fair and impartial manner in accordance with the objective goals and criteria specified in the syllabus.
