International students from Nagaoka University of Technology and high school students from Nagaoka City exchange opinions on SDGs

On Saturday, August 7, three international students from Nagaoka University of Technology participated in the “Harashin Presents: Shine! High School Student Program: You are the Tomorrow’s Glocalists,” holding an exchange event with 15 high school students from Nagaoka City to think about what they can do to help achieve the SDGs.

This program, organized by the Nagaoka International Exchange Association and sponsored by HARASHIN Co., Ltd. took place over five days, aiming to develop human resources who can resolve local issues while keeping global issues in mind. Our international students participated on the fourth day of the program, which focused on “Thinking about the SDGs with International Students in Nagaoka.”

The three students, Ly Vu Duc (from Vietnam), Bilguunmaa Myagmardulam (from Mongolia), and Martínez Sánchez Alejandro Isidro (from Mexico), responded to questions from high school students, talking about what they felt and what surprised them when they came to Japan regarding environmental and social issues, as well as the current situations, issues, and initiatives in their home countries. They also offered active advice to the high school students in group work based on the interviews.

Through the interviews and group work, the participants were able to produce “Action Plans We Can Do Ourselves” toward resolving the issues; they voiced their appreciation for the improvements made to their outcome presentations.

We will continue to engage actively in international exchange and promotion of the SDGs in cooperation with the local community.
