Professor / YAMAGATA Hiroshi
Professor Yamagata is a former senior official of the Nuclear Regulation Authority, and he has extensive knowledge and experience in nuclear power plant safety. Although his career is truly impressive, he is very approachable and maintains a close relationship with students, even joining laboratory events. He is always kind and easy to talk to.

Research Content

Our laboratory addresses two major safety issues in nuclear power plants—hydrogen explosions and projectile impacts—through both analytical and experimental approaches.
For the topic of hydrogen explosions, we evaluate how hydrogen explosions affect structural components under the new regulatory standards for nuclear power plants, assessing blast resistance and exploring effective protective measures.
For projectile impacts, we conduct structural impact assessments based on the counter‑terrorism requirements introduced after the 9/11 attacks, and we investigate new protective strategies that could replace conventional reinforced‑concrete structures.

A Day in the Lab

Our laboratory holds a weekly seminar in which all members give presentations.
By sharing what we have worked on during the week and any difficulties encountered in our research, we identify solutions and make necessary adjustments.
Since there are no fixed core hours aside from the seminar, students are expected to take initiative and conduct their research independently.
The atmosphere in the lab is generally relaxed, with casual conversations ranging from research and career advice to favorite movies.
In the summer, we go to see the Nagaoka Fireworks Festival together with alumni, and we also occasionally have informal gatherings such as dinners or drinking parties.
