Associate Professor / KATSUMI Toshiyuki
Assoc. Prof. Katsumi is approachable and easy to talk to. He is always willing to discuss research topics and offers thoughtful advice. He understands students’ perspectives and supports them not only academically but also outside the laboratory.

Research Content

We focus on research related to combustion, energy, and thermal–fluid sciences. Our work is mainly experimental, though numerical analysis has become increasingly common in recent years. A representative topic is investigating the combustion characteristics of green propellants for spacecraft thrusters. To develop safer and higher-performance alternatives, we perform detailed experiments with new propellants and collect data essential for practical implementation. We also study the safe and efficient use of hydrogen, the fuel conversion and characterization of diverse biomass resources, and advanced pump technologies for future space transportation systems.

A Day in the Lab

Our laboratory has no mandatory core hours, allowing students to conduct research on a schedule that fits their lifestyle. We hold two weekly meetings, and research activities are organized in vertical teams consisting of M2 to B3 students. By working closely on projects led by master’s students, younger members gain knowledge of the field and gradually discover topics that match their interests. Even though the teams are vertical, discussions remain open and inclusive, creating an environment where every student can freely express ideas and information is actively shared across groups. We also enjoy various events and activities outside research.
