Associate Professor / NISHIYAMA Yuta
His research interest is a relationship between part and whole of living systems. This abstract theme covers a wide range of studies, such as human cognitive experiments, animal behaviours and computer simulations. He is an open-minded and tolerant person with a sense of responsibility, willing to accept sudents’ ideas through deep discussion.

Research Content

Most of the lab members carry out human cognitive experiments, while the others conduct theoretical studies. The experiments address how multisensory stimulation shapes unusual subjective experience. Manipulating correspondence among multisensory stimulation changes self-awareness of the body and also of an external object. These studies involve fundamental knowledge of consciousness and its application to VR systems. The theoretical studies address mechanisms of critical phenomena. The mutual anticipation model is used to reveal emergent properties of human/animal collective behaviours. An asynchronously tuned elementary cellular automaton is utilized as a tool of reservoir computing. Both empirical and theoretical studies would lead to an unconventional perspective of living systems.

A Day in the Lab

We have a meeting to review literature every week. Other than that, lab members work on individual research at their disposal. Your research theme will be made in line with your interests. The progress of your research should be reported accordingly, so you can find a way to improve it.
Lab members always help each other with their research. There are a lot of opportunities(if you like)to hang out with them. The students’ room has a good atmosphere, and you can also ask the professor to install something to make it cozier.
