Associate Professor / OKAMOTO Tomoichiro
Since Assoc. Prof. Okamoto is an alumnus of the National Institute of Technology and our university, he understands our campus life well and instructs us from a broad perspective, particularly based on his experience in industry. In terms of research, students’ autonomy is respected, and enthusiastic seminars are conducted. He is a reliable teacher who provides valuable advice not only on our studies but also on our daily lives.

Research Content

The main theme of our laboratory is research on fine ceramic materials related to electronics and optics. A “hot spot” is a phenomenon in which a localized region of a ceramic rod glows orange, and this region slowly moves toward the negative electrode when a voltage is applied to the rod. This phenomenon is being investigated for potential applications in oxygen sensors.“Electric current heating” is a method used to fabricate crystals with various shapes. Using this method, we have successfully observed ultraviolet lasing at room temperature from zinc oxide crystals. Furthermore, we are actively conducting the fabrication of wide-band-gap semiconductors, nanocrystals, and carbon nanomaterials.

Researchers at work

A Day in the Lab

In our laboratory, we conduct daily research activities and lectures, and hold weekly research seminars. Students work patiently on their research while receiving encouragement and guidance from the supervisor and senior members. In addition to research, we organize various events such as sports tournaments, social gatherings, and summer and winter seminar trips. In sports events, all members, including the supervisor, compete together. At social gatherings, we create an inclusive atmosphere where everyone can enjoy themselves, whether they drink alcohol or not. Anyone can take a leading role by excelling in research, sports, or social activities.
