Associate Professor / OTSUKA Yuichi
He is very passionate about research; his mindset reflects the relevance and importance of multidisciplinary work and a multicultural environment. He is constantly evaluating and guiding our efforts so we can carry out our researches in the best way as possible. Also, he invites us to develop our skills, such as English, so we can develop ourselves into complete and more skilled professionals

Research Content

The main field of research of our laboratory is biomaterials, and each student level has a main focus on their research. PhD students main focus is the modeling and simulation of multiscale mechanics applied to the elucidation of the loosening behavior of acetabular cup, atomic wear behavior of the Ti-HAp interface present in different implants, optimization and estimation of porosity of porous materials, etc. As for master student‘s focus is the fracture mechanics along with multidisciplinary technologies and knowledge applied to different mechanical testing like the fretting fatigue for Ti-HAp interface wearing behavior, the compression testing to elucidation of bone-auxetic structure metamaterials mechanical properties, cyclic compression testing for the hip joint implant to evaluate its damage behavior.

A Day in the Lab

Otsuka Lab shares room with Miyashita Lab where we have international environment due to the high ratio of foreigner student’s enrollment (research internship students included), ideal for those who like to develop a global mindset and English skills. We have a morning seminar (in English) 4 times a week where each student presents their progress; monthly party where both lab members hang out together and strength the bonds. As for Otsuka lab members we have a progress report every two weeks. Regular weekly meeting and cleaning of or rooms. Also, the English communication skills are a must to develop in our lab. Sometimes regular experiments are carried out so every student gets to know the equipment in our laboratory.

Thesis Subjects

  • (M)Evaluation of Damage Behavior at the Interface of Metamaterial Joints by Multimodal Measurement System
  • (D)Investigation on the effect of bone degradation on promoting cup-bone delamination and loosening of acetabular cup subjected to cyclic loading
  • (D)Molecular dynamics simulation for temperature dependency in stress-assisted diffusion wear behavior at the interface between Ti with HAp.
