Symposium: “Microorganism-related and SDGs-oriented Manufacturing”

In collaboration with the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Nagaoka University of Technology hosted the “Symposium on Microorganism-related and SDGs-oriented Manufacturing, Presented by Nagaoka University of Technology and AIST” on Friday, February 15. More than 60 specialists from various research fields attended the meeting and actively exchanged ideas. Participants from our university, AIST, National Institute of Technology, Nagaoka College (NITNC), and local companies had a precious opportunity for intellectual exchanges.

Our university has been nominated as a hub university for SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) 9 (Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation) in the UN Academic Impact Program as a model for engagement in SDGs. In the field of microorganisms, we promote innovation and sustainable development of related industries. Moreover, the goal of the “Global Pro-Active Root Technology Program” at our university was adopted as a participating member of the FY2019 Doctoral Program for World-leading Innovative & Smart Education (WISE Program) of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). This elite program fosters professionals with expertise that will contribute to the solution of SDGs-related problems in cooperation with the industry and overseas cooperation bases.

In this symposium, Dr. Yoichi Kamagata, Director of Research Strategy, Department of Life Science and Biotechnology of AIST, gave the audience a special lecture entitled, “Presentation of Efforts for Research and Development by the Department of Life Science and Biotechnology of AIST”. In addition, specialists from various fields presented cutting-edge research on microorganism-related manufacturing that will contribute to the achievement of SDGs.

This symposium was held at NaDec Base, which is the hub office for collaborations among three universities and a technical college located in central Nagaoka City. A large number of ordinary citizens also attended.
